The Music Judge has two main tasks:

Guardianship of the Barbershop Style

  • act as a filter or screen through which the music must pass
  • allow good barbershop music to pass straight through
  • note when one or more of the basic ingredients of barbershop music are not met and lower a score appropriate to the seriousness of the disturbance, its frequency and overall effect

All members of the Music Category will be pleased to advise on the contest-worthiness of particular arrangements. Please contact any of the above in the first instance. For reliable advice it is best to get music checked by current serving Music Judges.

Assess the musicality of the performance

  • a high degree of musicality will produce a totally convincing performance where technique appears artistic, skillful, effortless and there are no distractions in the performance, thus leaving the audience with a sense of completeness, satisfaction, enjoyment and pleasure
  • lack of musicality may produce gaps/holes/distractions due to either lack of technique and/or failure to communicate the theme/strength/message of the song leaving the audience without that complete feeling, dissatisfied or confused.

The Music Category rewards the performer who demonstrates understanding and mastery of the musical elements and devices provided in the arrangement. The Music Judge is assessing the degree to which these elements are put together so that the audience are hearing and seeing a performance of true Music.
